The History of Elmhurst, IL

Elmhurst was amalgamated in 1882 and is located in DuPage County, with some parts of it overlapping Cook County.  This city of diverse cultures is known for its varied agricultural activity and its industrial expansion which has been taking place over the years. Elmhurst currently has a population of over 340,000 inhabitants.

Settlement

The Potawatomi Indians resided in the area before the white settlement in the early 19th century. The Potawatomi inhabited in a village located in Salt Creek in the midst of Hinsdale and Elmhurst. After the Black Hawk war in the 1830s, white migration began in the area, comprising mostly settlers of English and German origin. The two cultures have greatly influenced spoken and written language in Elmhurst with both English and German being taught in schools.

The merging of the two cultures made Elmhurst a dual characteristic society. English settlers occupied the Southern side of Salt Creek while German speakers settled on the Northern part. These settlements developed to later be known as Addison and York Townships.

The Emerson subdivision became the host of the 1871 fire victims of the Great Chicago fire. As a result, new homes were established around this region with some of the refugees becoming permanent settlers.

Founders

Pioneer settlers of Elmhurst including, Fredrick Graue, Elisha Fish, Jesse Atwater, Conrad Fischer and John Glos, sr among others played an important role in the development of Elmhurst city. Descendants of John Glos became very opinion leaders in politics and the social- economic arena of the Elmhurst community.

Development

Township and county governed Elmhurst until 1882 when an election was held for the incorporation of the village, on the passing of the vote boundaries were established.  Until the time of incorporation, Elmhurst constituted of majorly Roman Catholics and Lutherans with a Republican political leaning.

Elmhurst Chicago Stone Company established in 1883 for purposes of quarrying dolomite brought about a huge industrial revolution in the town. The city lost its rural set up in 1920, to become the largest city in DuPage during which Elmhurst Memorial Hospital was established. Other amenities such as the Lizardo museum of Lapidary Art, Elmhurst Symphony Orchestra, Elmhurst college and Wilder Park Conservatory were integrated into the city.

The Current Elmhurst
