The History of Geneva, IL

Geneva, located along the scenic Fox River, has a rich history characterized by its New England architecture and the old Dutch Fabyan Windmill dating back to the 1850’s. Historical information and wonderful old photographs can be found at the Geneva History Museum.  Geneva is well known for its commitment to the historic preservation of the city and its historic district has been listed on the National Register of Historic Places.

La Fox, Herrington’s Ford, and Big Spring were the names used for the town before the New York immigrant, Charles Volney Dyer suggested it be named “Geneva”, after a town in his home state. Founded by James and Charity Herrington in 1933 it was incorporated in 1858 as a village and in 1887 as a city and is the seat of Kane County.

In May of 1833, James Clayton and his wife Charity Herrington brought their six children to Chicago from Meadville, Pennsylvania. Soon after they arrived at Big Spring they bought the cabin of Daniel Shaw Haight and proceeded to become part of the leading builders of Geneva. When the residents of a nearby Native American village were forced to move west, they were quickly replaced by white American settlers. James Clayton was instrumental in having the town platted and secured as a county seat. He also founded the first tavern and general store and served as sheriff as well a postmaster before his death in 1839. Charity Herrington added a subdivision along the railroad under her own name and she died in 1879. One of her ten children, James, became first mayor and his brother, Augustus was a U.S. District Attorney.

The original plat of Geneva was designated by wide streets appropriate to a county seat and busy commercial center. Historical changes in communications and transportation are reflected in the town’s development over the years. Starting off with its first axis straddling the Fox River, Geneva started moving west in 1853 along the new Chicago & North Western Railroad axis. During the 20th century, automobiles allowed the ever westward expansion of the town.

Early townspeople, primarily New Yorkers and Yankees, were well educated with one significant group of professionals forming the “Boston Colony” comprised of doctors, lawyers, teachers, ministers, and merchants. The first immigrant population came from Sweden and their cultural impact remains to this day. During the construction of the railroad, they formed a crucial component of the industrial labor force. Later immigrants came from Greece, Italy, and Ireland.

Although industry has played a significant role in the economy of Geneva, it has emerged as a primarily white-collar bedroom community. Riverbank Laboratories, the first Research & Development facility in Geneva, was started at the home of Colonel George Fabyan and became notorious for its research and intelligence contribution to the successes of the U.S. military during both the First and Second World Wars. This legacy is honored by the Fabyan Forest Preserves.

Early industries included the Bennett Brothers’ “Geneva Belle” flour; tubular steel furniture; smoothing and fluting irons; glucose and reaper factories; and a creamery. At the close of the 20th century, Geneva industries included railway supplies; industrial electronics; precision machine parts by Burgess-Norton; and publishing.
