The History of Glen Ellyn, Illinois

Glen Ellyn is an affluent suburb of Chicago with a population of 27,450 according to the 2010 Census. Its development was marked by 7 name changes between 1833 and 1885. It was first named “Babcock Grove” in 1833 after the first settlers, Ralph and Morgan Babcock; then DuPage Center in 1834; Stacy’s Corner in 1835; Newton’s Station in 1849; Danby in 1851; Prospect Park in 1882; and finally Glen Ellyn in 1885 after the wife of the village president, Thomas E. Hill, whose name was “Ellyn”.

The layout of the village was established in the mid-1800s and the historic buildings in Glen Ellyn are primarily from the late 1800 era and the 1920 era. The first landowner was Deacon W. Churchill who came from New York in 1834. The first tavern was built by a soldier of the War of 1912, Moses Stacy in 1846. Stacy’s Tavern is now a historical monument that stands at the crossroads of Main Street and Geneva Road and served as a halfway stop between Chicago and Fox River Valley.

The Galena & Chicago Union Railroad running through Glen Ellyn was completed in 1849 but it did not become a stop until a local resident Lewey Newton offered to build a water tank and depot if the railroad allowed trains to stop there. The depot became known as “Newton’s Station”.

In 1962 the first Congregational church was built followed by many Protestant churches. The first Catholic church was only built 60 years later.

In 1889 a project to create a new lake by building a dam in a nearby stream was spearheaded by Thomas E. Hill and Philo Stacy and called Lake Glen Ellyn. In 1890 mineral springs were discovered near the village and a year later Glen Ellyn became Chicago’s latest health resort. In 1892 Lake Glen Ellyn Hotel was built and on May 10, 1892, the village of Glen Ellyn was incorporated. A  massive fire destroyed half of the district in that same year and 14 years later lightning struck the Glen Ellyn Hotel setting it on fire that burned it to the ground in 1907 the fire department was founded and by the end of the 1900’s it eventually became DuPage County’s last fire department to consist of all volunteers.

The Glen Ellyn Post Office, located on the corner of Pennsylvania and Main Street,  has a mural dating back to the 1930s titled “Settlers” that has been designated a Local Landmark. The building is one of very few in Glen Ellyn that were built in the 1930s and therefore has important historical value.

Another significant historical element of Glen Ellyn is the cast-iron horse trough that was donated to the village in 1907 by William Newton, the son of the first doctor and town planner of Glen Ellyn. Originally the trough stood near the railroad tracks but was moved to its new location at the intersection of Main Street and Crescent Boulevard.

There are several reasons why Glen Ellyn village became such a popular destination during the early 1900s. The area had natural beauty with its groves of lush green trees and rolling hills and the resort hotel overlooking the artificial lake offered a welcome respite from the gritty grind of Chicago. The developments around the lake brought about an intense campaign by the developers to advertise the lake, hotel, and healing powers of the mineral springs located nearby. At the same time, they platted and sold home sites near the lake. The visitors to the hotel were wealthy influentials who were in an excellent position to promote the hotel and the town and they did so with great success. In just 28 years from 1900 to 1928, Glen Ellyn had a population explosion of 850% and a building boom in what is now known as Downtown Glen Ellyn.
